Why live in Playas del Coco
A real beach town on a sheltered bay in Guanacaste, with everyday services, warm water and some of the easiest access in the country.
A beach town, not a resort bubble
Playas del Coco, or simply “El Coco”, is one of the longest-established coastal towns on Guanacaste’s North Pacific coast. It still mixes fishing-village life with restaurants, bars and live music around a wide horseshoe bay of dark volcanic sand.
Supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, healthcare and everyday services are close by, so life here feels easy whether you come for a week or a whole season.

Close to the airport
Coco is about 35 km from Liberia International Airport (LIR), roughly 30 minutes on a paved road, one of the shortest airport-to-beach transfers in Guanacaste. Serena is approximately 25 minutes from the airport.
Life on the water
- Diving and snorkeling: the Catalina Islands are about 45 minutes away by boat, with giant manta rays most likely from about November to April. The Bat Islands (Islas Murciélago), about two hours each way, are a bucket-list dive for experienced divers.
- Sailing and fishing: sunset catamaran sails, snorkel trips, sportfishing and kayaking around the Gulf of Papagayo.
- Quieter beaches nearby: Ocotal, Playa Hermosa and Playa Panamá are just minutes from town.

Easy day trips
- Rincón de la Vieja National Park: trails, mud pots and hot springs, about 1¼–1¾ hours away.
- Llanos de Cortés waterfall: a wide waterfall with a swimming area, about 1–1½ hours away.
- Liberia: the “White City”, about 45 minutes away, with its historic adobe houses.
The seasons
December to April is the dry season: sunny and lively, with the best visibility for diving the Catalinas. From about November to March the Papagayo winds blow and the water is a little cooler. The green season brings afternoon showers and quieter streets; September and October are the wettest months.
Living here, your way
Many people start with holidays and come back for longer stays. Serena’s three-bedroom residences give you room for family and friends, about 5 minutes from the beach and Main Street.
